According to legend, Cleopatra and Nefertiti already relied on the beneficial effects of aloe juice.
Symbolism, colors & shapes
The sap of aloe is particularly popular as an additive for cosmetic and skin care products. According to legend, Cleopatra and Nefertiti already drew on their beneficial effects. The name is derived from the Arabic word “alloeh”, which means something like “shiny, bitter liquid.” This refers to the cooling, gel-like liquid in the leaves. In Arabic-speaking countries, aloe is also a symbol of patience, because even though it only grows slowly, it impresses with its long lifespan and thus becomes a real member of the family.
With its powerful and robust appearance, it is an easy-to-care roommate: the aloe has thick blue-green leaves that reach a length of up to 50 cm and, with their serrated edges, emerge from the center of the plant in a rosette shape. The plant can grow to a height of up to one meter and is characterized by its air-purifying effect and exceptional resilience. In doing so, it stores moisture and nutrients in its leaves in order to survive dry growing seasons. In good conditions, it forms inflorescences after at least three years.
Origin
Aloe is a type of succulent from the Affodill family and originally comes from the Arabian Peninsula. The approximately 300 known species of desert plant have specialized in surviving even in extreme climate conditions. The over 75 active ingredients that it produces in its leaves help it in this fight for survival. If a leaf is damaged, the injury is immediately sealed with a viscous sap to keep moisture loss as low as possible. However, the active ingredients of aloe also have healing properties for humans, which is why it was already a symbol of immortality in ancient Egypt.
The first description of the plant in Europe dates back to 1655. Nowadays, aloe is also common around the Mediterranean, Indonesia, Mexico and the Caribbean.
