Nurture

James should only be watered moderately. The soil must be slightly moist but not wet. He likes occasional fertilization, twice a month is completely sufficient. James rarely produces flowers as a houseplant. Should it still bloom, we recommend cutting off the flowers with a sharp knife, as they draw a lot of strength from the plant and develop a somewhat unpleasant smell.

Symbolism, colors & shapes

Big green leaves with holes... simply unmistakable. But there are definitely different types and varieties. In addition to the green version, for example, a white and a climbing plant with small leaves that have large holes. The leaves of a young monster plant are heart-shaped. If it receives sufficient light and moisture, the leaves grow and deep cuts occur. Mature leaves can be up to one meter in diameter.

It is said that the Monstera deliciosa is a symbol of suffocation. This may have something to do with the fast-growing shoots, the impressively large leaves and the long, snake-shaped aerial roots. We'd rather stick to Chinese symbolism. In it, the Monstera stands for a long life and the veneration of ancestors and other respected people. Do you see, that makes you so much happier and maybe you want to buy a Monstera?

Origin

The Monstera belongs to the Arum family. These are lianas from Panama and southern Mexico. The plants climb up to 20 meters high into the trees. With their fleshy aerial roots, they also hold onto tree trunks and rocks or with adhesive roots on the ground. The plants are now also widespread in the forests of Southeast Asia. The most well-known species is Monstera deliciosa. The species name “deliciosa” refers to the wonderful, 20 cm long fruits that used to be grown in Central America. The taste is somewhat reminiscent of a banana combined with a pineapple. At home, however, your plant will unfortunately not easily become a Monstera fruit basket.
